Copper Bathtub Care

Copper Bathtub Care
Caring for a copper bathtub is surprisingly simple, as copper is naturally durable and gradually develops a patina (a protective layer) that gives it a unique appearance.
Here are the key points on how to care for it properly:
🛁 Daily/Regular Care
- Rinse After Use: After every bath, quickly rinse the tub with warm water to remove soap residue, oils, or bath salts.
- Wipe Dry: The most important step! Wipe the tub dry with a soft cloth (e.g., microfibre or a terry towel). This prevents water spots, especially in areas with hard water.
- Use Mild Soap: For routine cleaning, a mild (pH neutral) dishwashing detergent mixed with warm water is sufficient.
🚫 What to Avoid (IMPORTANT!)
- Harsh Chemicals: Never use cleaning products containing ammonia, chlorine, bleach, or strong acids (e.g., some toilet cleaners). These substances will damage the patina and can discolour the copper surface.
- Abrasive Tools: Avoid rough sponges, scouring pads, or abrasive cleaning powders that could scratch the surface. Always use only a soft cloth or sponge.
- Acidic Substances: Do not leave acidic substances (e.g., lemon juice, vinegar, ketchup) on the copper surface for long, as they can strip the patina.
✨ Surface Maintenance and Patina
- Patinated Surface (Antique Copper): If your tub has a dark patina, simple daily care (rinsing and drying) is all you need. The patina renews itself over time, and any scratches or colour changes will naturally blend into it.
- Polished Surface (Polished Copper): If you want to maintain the high shine that resembles a new state, you may need to regularly apply a protective wax (e.g., special metal wax) every 4–6 weeks. This helps protect the shine and slows down natural oxidation (patina formation).
- Stain Removal: For tougher stains or mineral deposits, you can use a paste made from baking soda and a little water. Apply, gently rub with a soft cloth, and rinse thoroughly.
If you follow these simple instructions, your copper bathtub will serve you and bring joy for many years.
